The exorcist?

I watched the exorcist the beginning a couple months ago, and then rented Dominion the prequal to the exorcist. That was odd, they were almost like the same movie, but different, has anyone else seen these two movies, and know why they were both made so much like eachother?

Dominion was made by the studio, but when they saw the final cut, they didn’t think it was gory enoguh, so they scrapped it and commissioned The Beginning to be made using the same sets and some of the same actors, but as this movie bombed, they released Dominion on DVD to try and recoup some of their loses.

I haven’t seen both but I have seen it done with other films (Nikita?). One answer may be that the initial film was low budget but drew enough interest of a producer to try again with a bigger budget. Film producers often buy the movie rights to a novel and either follow it closely or deviate from it as much as desired. With a new cast (stars?) and screen play (script) it is almost a different story (happening to different people). The producer of the second version likely has to buy the rights from the first producer, adding a profit motive. I enjoyed both versions of (Nikita?).
